  • 06 FEBRUARY 2015 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: The spire of Santa Cruz Catholic Church dominates the skyline of the Thonburi section of Bangkok. There has been a Catholic church on the site since 1770. The current church was finished in 1916. It is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Thailand. Now the neighborhood around the church is known for the Thai adaptation of Portuguese cakes baked in the neighborhood. Several hundred Siamese (Thai) Buddhists converted to Catholicism in the 1770s. Some of the families started baking the cakes. When the Siamese Empire in Ayutthaya was sacked by the Burmese, the Portuguese and Thai Catholics fled to Thonburi, in what is now Bangkok. The Portuguese established a Catholic church near the new Siamese capital. There are still a large number of Thai Catholics living in the neighborhood around the church. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

A haboob (Arabic for "strong wind") is a type of intense duststorm commonly observed in arid regions throughout the world. They have been observed in the Sahara desert, the Arabian Peninsula, throughout Kuwait, and in Iraq. In the USA, they are frequently observed in the deserts of Arizona, including Yuma and Phoenix, as well as New Mexico and Texas. "Haboob" has been widely used to describe dust storms for more than a generation In Arizona but this year the very word "haboob" has become a political football because some conservatives have lobbied against use of the word, favoring English words, like "dust storm." There are about 80 Chinese casinos and resort hotels open in Sihanoukville and dozens more under construction. The casinos are changing the city, once a sleepy port on Southeast Asia's "backpacker trail" into a booming city. The change is coming with a cost though. Many Cambodian residents of Sihanoukville have lost their homes to make way for the casinos and the jobs are going to Chinese workers, brought in to build casinos and work in the casinos. Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan or Wat Arun ("Temple of Dawn"), a Buddhist temple (wat) in Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok, on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. The temple derives its name from the Hindu god Aruna, often personified as the radiations of the rising sun. Wat Arun is among the best known of Thailand's landmarks and the first light of the morning reflects off the surface of the temple with pearly iridescence. Although the temple had existed since at least the seventeenth century, its distinctive Khmer style prang (spires) were built in the early nineteenth century during the reign of King Rama II. • 23 APRIL 2013 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: Buddhist monks walk across Sanam Luang with the Grand Palace in the background. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand) since 1782. The king, his court and his royal government were based on the grounds of the palace until 1925. The present monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), currently resides at Chitralada Palace, but the Grand Palace is still used for official events. Several royal ceremonies and state functions are held within the walls of the palace every year. Construction of the palace began on 6 May 1782, at the order of King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (Rama I), the founder of the Chakri Dynasty, when he moved the capital city from Thonburi to Bangkok. Throughout successive reigns, many new buildings and structures were added, especially during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). By 1925 the king, the Royal Family and the government were no longer permanently settled at the palace, and had moved to other residences. The palace complex is roughly rectangular and has a combined area of 218,400 square metres (2,351,000 sq ft), surrounded by four walls. It is situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River at the heart of the Rattanakosin Island, today in the Phra Nakhon District. The Grand Palace is bordered by Sanam Luang and Na Phra Lan Road to the north, Maharaj Road to the west, Sanamchai Road to the east and Thai Wang Road to the south. The Grand Palace is made up of numerous buildings, halls, pavilions set around open lawns, gardens and courtyards. Its asymmetry and eclectic styles are due to its organic development, with additions and rebuilding being made by successive reigning kings over 200 years of history. It is divided into several quarters: the Temple of the Emerald Buddha; the Outer Court, with many public buildings; the Middle Court, including the Phra Maha Monthian Buildings, the Phra Maha Prasat Buildings and the Chakri Maha Prasat Buildings; the Inner Cou
