  • 06 FEBRUARY 2015 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: The spire of Santa Cruz Catholic Church dominates the skyline of the Thonburi section of Bangkok. There has been a Catholic church on the site since 1770. The current church was finished in 1916. It is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Thailand. Now the neighborhood around the church is known for the Thai adaptation of Portuguese cakes baked in the neighborhood. Several hundred Siamese (Thai) Buddhists converted to Catholicism in the 1770s. Some of the families started baking the cakes. When the Siamese Empire in Ayutthaya was sacked by the Burmese, the Portuguese and Thai Catholics fled to Thonburi, in what is now Bangkok. The Portuguese established a Catholic church near the new Siamese capital. There are still a large number of Thai Catholics living in the neighborhood around the church. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 06 DECEMBER 2007 -- PHOENIX, AZ: A Southwest Airlines plane lands at Sky Harbor Airport. Sky Harbor International Airport is on the edge of downtown Phoenix, in the middle of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is one of the largest airports in the country with more than 1,400 flights daily. The airport's proximity to downtown though, less than five miles from the city center, is both a blessing and a curse. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the airport from downtown, but a proposed 510 foot tall building proposed in downtown, near the airport flight path, has raised safety concerns. The Federal Aviation Administration wants the development capped at 355 feet. Similar concerns about a proposed football stadium in Tempe, which borders the east side of the airport, scuttled that project and led to the stadium being built in Glendale, about 30 miles from the airport.
