  • 13 JANUARY 2013 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: A tourist boat passes a Thai boy resting on a piling while he and his friends were swimming in Khlong Bang Luang in Bangkok. The Bang Luang neighborhood lines Khlong (Canal) Bang Luang in the Thonburi section of Bangkok on the west side of Chao Phraya River. It was established in the late 18th Century by King Taksin the Great after the Burmese sacked the Siamese capital of Ayutthaya. The neighborhood, like most of Thonburi, is relatively undeveloped and still criss crossed by the canals which once made Bangkok famous. It's now a popular day trip from central Bangkok and offers a glimpse into what the city used to be like. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 22 MAY 2011 - SCOTTSDALE, AZ: People on horseback pass a home (on the right) reportedly owned by Sarah Palin in Scottsdale, AZ. Most of the lots around the home are several acres big and many of the homeowners in the area have stables on their property. According to the Arizona Republic, Sarah Palin and her husband Todd Palin, bought the 8,000 square foot home for $1.695 million cash. The newspaper said the Palin's name does not appear on the paperwork and the home was bought by Safari Investments LLC out of Delaware. The paper said the deal "appears designed to cloak the identity of a high-profile buyer." The home has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a six car garage, swimming pool, spa, home theater, wine cellar and children's "jungle gym" in the backyard. The home is surrounded by a tall wall with an electronic gate. Phoenix TV stations have reported that a black SUV with Alaska license plates has been seen entering and leaving the compound. People in the house have refused to comment on who owns the home. Neither Palin nor her husband have been seen at the home since news of the sale broke Saturday, May 21. Photo by Jack Kurtz

The students swim in the floodwaters that have inundated their playground. The Chao Phraya River, the largest river that runs through central Thailand, has hit flood stage in several areas in Ayutthaya and Ang Thong provinces. Villages along the river are flooded and farms are losing their crops due to the flood. This is the same area that was devastated by floods in 2011, but the floods this year are not expected to be as severe. The floods are being fed by water released from upstream dams. The water is being released to make room for heavy rains expected in October. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 09 MAY 2016 - TA TUM, SURIN, THAILAND: People swim in the reservoir behind Huai Khanad Mon Dam in Ta Tum, Surin, Thailand. The reservoir is almost out of water and is too low to water the agricultural fields around it. Thailand is in the midst of its worst drought in more than 50 years. The government has asked farmers to delay planting their rice until the rains start, which is expected to be in June. The drought is expected to cut Thai rice production and limit exports of Thai rice. The drought, caused by a very strong El Nino weather pattern is cutting production in the world's top three rice exporting countries: India, Thailand and Vietnam. Rice prices in markets in Thailand and neighboring Cambodia are starting to creep up. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

The ducks work in the rice fields, they go through the fields eating bugs and pests that hurt the rice crop. The ducks' owner said the drought has made it harder for his ducks to work because there isn't enough water in the fields for the ducks to swim through the field. It hasn't rained in central Thailand in more than three months, impacting agriculture and domestic water use. Many farms are running short of irrigration water and salt water from the Gulf of Siam has come up the Chao Phraya River and infiltrated the water plants in Pathum Thani province that serve Bangkok.PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 07 AUGUST 2013 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: A Thai anti-government Yellow Shirt wearing swim goggles in case police use tear gas, waves the V for Victory during a protest against a proposed amnesty bill. About 2,500 protestors opposed to an amnesty bill proposed by Thailand's ruling party marched towards the Thai parliament in the morning. The amnesty could allow exiled fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to return to Thailand. Thaksin's supporters are in favor of the bill but Thai Yellow Shirts and government opponents are against the bill. Thai police deployed about more than 10,000 riot police and closed roads around the parliament. Although protest leaders called off the protest rather than confront police, a few people were arrested for assaulting police when they tried to break through police lines. Several police officers left the scene under medical care after they collapsed in the heat. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ
