  • 26 JUNE 2019 - CENTRAL CITY, IOWA: LUCAS TAYLOR, 12, holds his chicken while it's inspected at the poultry check in at the Linn County Fair. Summer is county fair season in Iowa. Most of Iowa’s 99 counties host their county fairs before the Iowa State Fair, August 8-18 this year. The Linn County Fair runs June 26 - 30. The first county fair in Linn County was in 1855. The fair provides opportunities for 4-H members, FFA members and the youth of Linn County to showcase their accomplishments and talents and provide activities, entertainment and learning opportunities to the diverse citizens of Linn County and guests.       <br />

Most came to the US after the wars in Southeast Asia.   • 13 JANUARY 2019 - NAKHON PATHOM, THAILAND: DHAMMAVANNA, a female monk at Wat Songdhammakalyani, leads other female monks through the community on their morning alms rounds. The Sangha Supreme Council, Thailand's governing body of Buddhist monks, bans the ordination of female monks, but hundreds of Thai women have gone abroad, mostly to Sri Lanka and India, to be ordained. There are about 270 women monks in Thailand and about 250,000 male monks. There are 7 monks and 6 novices at Wat Songdhammakalyani in Nakhon Pathom. It was the first temple in Thailand to have female monks. The temple opened 60 years ago and has always been a temple of women monks. Women can be ordained as novices in Thailand, but to be ordained as a full monk would require the participation of 10 female monks and 10 male monks, and male monks in Thailand are barred from participating in women's ordination ceremonies. The Ratchada Night Market is the newest night market in Bangkok. It was originally a small night market popular with local people but now is tourism destination.   • 25 FEBRUARY 2019 - BANGKOK, THAILAND:  Sikh men eat during the morning "Langar" (communal meal) at the Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha. The Gurdwara serves about 500 free meals Monday through Saturday and about 1,000 free meals on Sundays. Although Sikhs are not vegetarians, the Langar meals are vegetarian so anyone can them without violating a religious edict on diet. The meals are free for anyone who walks into the Gurdwara, regardless of their religion or nationality. The Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha in Bangkok is one of the largest Sikh Gurdwaras (temples) outside of India. It is in Bangkok's "Little India" neighborhood, next to Chinatown.   • 22 NOVEMBER 2019 - DES MOINES, IOWA: US Marine Corps First Sgt. MICHAEL SODERGREN holds a folded United States flag during the reinterment service of US Marine Corps Reserve Private Channing Whitaker in Glendale Cemetery. The flag was presented to Whitaker's family. Whitaker died in the Battle of Tarawa on Nov. 22, 1943. He was buried on Betio Island, in the Gilbert Islands, and his remains were recovered in March 2019. He was identified by a DNA match with surviving family members in Iowa. Whitaker was reintered in the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines exactly 76 years after his death in World War Two. Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan or Wat Arun ("Temple of Dawn") is a Buddhist temple (wat) in Bangkok on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. The temple derives its name from the Hindu god Aruna, who is personified as the rising sun. Wat Arun is among the best known of Thailand's temples. The temple has existed since at least the seventeenth century, but its distinctive prang (spires) were built in the Khmer style in the early nineteenth century during the reign of King Rama II. Chinese New Year celebrations in Bangkok started on February 4, 2019, although the city's official celebration is February 5 - 6. The coming year will be the Year of the Pig in the Chinese zodiac.   • 22 JANUARY 2019 - PHRA PRADAENG, SAMUT PRAKAN, THAILAND: A worker drops the ramp on a motorcycle and vehicle ferry that crosses the Chao Phraya River in Phra Pradaeng, in the suburbs south of Bangkok. The use of vehicle ferries across the river has gone down as the government has built bridges to connect communities on both sides of the river. The Phra Pradaeng ferries are the busiest vehicle ferries in the Bangkok metropolitan area. Families who live in the shanty town came to Sihanoukville from other Cambodian provinces because of the town's booming economy and construction industry building Chinese resorts and casinos. There are about 80 Chinese casinos and resort hotels open in Sihanoukville and dozens more under construction. The casinos are changing the city, once a sleepy port on Southeast Asia's "backpacker trail" into a booming city. The change is coming with a cost though. Many Cambodian residents of Sihanoukville  have lost their homes to make way for the casinos and the jobs are going to Chinese workers, brought in to build casinos and work in the casinos. The Thai government has closed more than 400 schools for the rest of the week because of high levels of pollution in Bangkok. At one point Wednesday, Bangkok had the third highest level of air pollution in the world, only Delhi, India and Lahore, Pakistan were worst. The Thai government has suspended some government construction projects and ordered other projects to take dust abatement measures. Bangkok authorities have also sprayed water into the air in especially polluted intersections to control dust. Thirty people became US citizens during a naturalization ceremony at the Iowa Cubs game in Des Moines. The naturalization ceremony is an Iowa Cubs 4th of July tradition.   • 27 OCTOBER 2019 - POLK CITY, IOWA: A farmer harvests corn near Polk City, Iowa. Iowa farmers have been weeks behind schedule through most of the 2019 growing season. A cold, wet spring across most of the state delayed planting by about 2 weeks. A historically wet October has pushed the harvest of soybeans and corn by up 3 weeks. Central Iowa normally gets about 2.6 inches of rain in October, this year central Iowa has received about  7.3 inches of rain. This year has been the wettest year on record in Iowa. Farmers have also been contending with low prices, brought on by trade war between the US and China. The Chinese government put retaliatory tariffs on US agricultural products, including corn, soybeans, and pork, all important Iowa agricultural products.           PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

Thais are tolerant of other religions and although Thailand is officially Buddhist, Catholics are allowed to freely practice and people who convert to Catholicism are not discriminated against.
