  • 13 DECEMBER 2017 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: The Royal Thai Navy traditional music band performs at the Royal Crematorium on Sanam Luang in Bangkok. The crematorium was used for the funeral of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand. He was cremated on 26 October 2017. The crematorium is open to visitors until 31 December 2017. People started camping out along Atsadang Road in Bangkok near the royal cremation site on Monday. The gates won't open until Wednesday morning and the cremation isn't until Thursday night, so most people will sleep outside, on sidewalks and footpaths for three nights. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to try to get into Sanam Luang, the site of the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand, but the site will only hold about 60,000 people. Most of the people living in the slum have been evicted, and the land they were living on has been turned into a volunteer center for people helping with the royal cremation, which is October 25-29, 2017. The Royal Household has announced that the palace will close to the public, including tourists, on 04 October 2017 to allow officials to complete preparations for the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand, who died on 13 October 2016. They also extended the official mourning period by 15 days. It was originally set to end on 13 October 2017 but now will end on 26 October 2017, the day of the King's cremation.   • 24 MAY 2017 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: A woman at the Emporium, an upscale shopping mall in Bangkok, makes wooden roses to be used during the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand. In Thai culture it is customary to place wooden flowers in front of a deceased person's coffin or urn as a last tribute before cremation. The Royal Cremation Organisation Committee, which is overseeing plans for the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand, asked the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to provide three million wooden flowers for the late King's cremation. The BMA, in turn, has asked malls and civic organizations to provide flowers. The Mall Group, which owns Emporium, has pledged to provide up to one million wooden "Wiangping" roses, which in Thai culture symbolize unconditional love.   • 26 NOVEMBER 2016 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: A candlelight vigil for the late king of Thailand in Bangkok's Chinatown. Thousands of people gathered on Yaowarat Road in the heart of Bangkok's Chinatown to honor Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand. The event was organized by the Thai-Chinese community and included a performance by the Royal Thai Navy orchestra of music composed by the Late King, a prayer by hundreds of Buddhist monks. It concluded with a candlelight vigil. The King died after a long hospitalization on October 13. The government has declared a one year mourning period. HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, the Heir Apparent and Late King's son, is expected to be name the King next week. He will be known as Rama X.       PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 29 OCTOBER 2016 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: A man carries a photo of the late Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand in front of the Grand Palace. Saturday was the first day Thais could pay homage to the funeral urn of the late Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand, at Dusit Maha Prasart Throne Hall in the Grand Palace. The Palace said 10,000 people per day would be issued free tickerts to enter the Throne Hall but by late Saturday morning more than 100,000 people were in line and the palace scrapped plans to require mourners to get the free tickets. Traditionally, Thai Kings lay in state in their urns, but King Bhumibol Adulyadej is breaking with tradition. His urn reportedly contains some of his hair, but the King is in a coffin,  not in the urn. The laying in state will continue until at least January 2017 but may be extended.   • 23 AUGUST 2017 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: City workers take apart a concrete post in Pom Mahakan. Bangkok city officials this week started cleaning up the area around cremation site for Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand. Work started by cleaning Pom Mahakan, a historic fort about two kilometers northeast of the cremation site. They are going to scrub and paint the fort's historic exterior walls, which were built in the late 18th century. The King, who died on 13 October 2016, will be cremated on 26 October 2017.   • 24 MAY 2017 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: Volunteers at the Emporium, an upscale shopping mall in Bangkok, make wooden roses to be used during the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand. In Thai culture it is customary to place wooden flowers in front of a deceased person's coffin or urn as a last tribute before cremation. The Royal Cremation Organisation Committee, which is overseeing plans for the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand, asked the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to provide three million wooden flowers for the late King's cremation. The BMA, in turn, has asked malls and civic organizations to provide flowers. The Mall Group, which owns Emporium, has pledged to provide up to one million wooden "Wiangping" roses, which in Thai culture symbolize unconditional love. The Royal Photographic Society of Thailand with the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and Thai Beverage Public Company Limited are hosting a photography exhibition to commemorate the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The "In Remembrance of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej" Photography Exhibition is dsiplaying 89 photographs by 89 photographers honoring King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s legacy. The King was an avid photographer was usually seen with a camera in his hands. The government declared a one year mourning period, during which Thais are encouraged to wear black and a 30 day mourning period during which Thais are very strongly encouraged to wear black. Furthermore, black is mandatory for official mourning functions, including visits to the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang, the public ceremonial ground across the street from the Palace. The expectation to wear black created a shortage of black clothes in many markets and Thailand's poor couldn't afford what black clothes were still available. Community groups have started dyeing clothes for people who either can't find or can't afford black clothes. Bangkok's infamous nightlife has been scaled back during the mourning period for the late Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand. The revered King died on 13 October 2016 at age 88. The government declared a year of mourning. The government ordered Thailand's notorious adult entertainment districts to turn off their neon lights, dress employees in black and ensure that music can't be heard on the street in front of the venues for 30 days, the government said the entertainment venues could resume normal operations on 14 November. The Palace said 10,000 people per day would be issued free tickerts to enter the Throne Hall but by late Saturday morning more than 100,000 people were in line and the palace scrapped plans to require mourners to get the free tickets.   • 24 OCTOBER 2017 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: People camp on Ratchadadamnoen Rd near the entrance to the royal cremation site. People started camping out along Atsadang Road in Bangkok near the royal cremation site on Monday. The gates won't open until Wednesday morning and the cremation isn't until Thursday night, so most people will sleep outside, on sidewalks and footpaths for three nights. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to try to get into Sanam Luang, the site of the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand, but the site will only hold about 60,000 people. The Royal Household has announced that the palace will close to the public, including tourists, on 04 October 2017 to allow officials to complete preparations for the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand, who died on 13 October 2016. They also extended the official mourning period by 15 days. It was originally set to end on 13 October 2017 but now will end on 26 October 2017, the day of the King's cremation.   • 24 MAY 2017 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: Women at the Emporium, an upscale shopping mall in Bangkok, make wooden roses to be used during the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand. In Thai culture it is customary to place wooden flowers in front of a deceased person's coffin or urn as a last tribute before cremation. The Royal Cremation Organisation Committee, which is overseeing plans for the cremation of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand, asked the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to provide three million wooden flowers for the late King's cremation. The BMA, in turn, has asked malls and civic organizations to provide flowers. The Mall Group, which owns Emporium, has pledged to provide up to one million wooden "Wiangping" roses, which in Thai culture symbolize unconditional love.   • 29 NOVEMBER 2016 - BANGKOK, THAILAND:  Buddhist monks wait to start a "tak bat" or merit making ceremony in the Ratchaprasong skywalk of the Bangkok BTS system. The tak bat was to honor Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Late King of Thailand. Food and other goods were given to the monks, who in turn gave the items to charities that will distribute them to Bangkok's poor. More than 100 Buddhist monks participated in the merit making ceremony.
