  • 08 AUGUST 2007 -- ISTANBUL, TURKEY: Jewelry for sale in a window in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. The Kapali Carsi (Grand Bazaar) in Old Istanbul is one of the city's main attractions. It has been in continuous use as market and bazaar for more than one thousand years. Istanbul, a city of about 14 million people, and the largest city in Turkey, straddles the Bosphorus Straits between Europe and Asia. It is one of the oldest cities in the world. It was once the center of the Eastern Roman Empire and was called Constantinople, named after the Roman Emperor Constantine. In 1453, Mehmet the Conqueror, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, captured the city and made it the center of the Ottoman Turkish Empire until World War I. After the war, the Ottoman Empire was dissolved and modern Turkey created. The capitol was moved to Ankara but Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) has remained the largest, most diverse city in Turkey. Photo by Jack Kurtz

  • 06 MARCH 2013 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: People crowd around a counter in a gold shop in Bangkok. Thailand's economic expansion since the 1970 has dramatically reduced both the amount of poverty and the severity of poverty in Thailand. At the same time, the gap between the very rich in Thailand and the very poor has grown so that income disparity is greater now than it was in 1970. Thailand scores .42 on the "Ginni Index" which measures income disparity on a scale of 0 (perfect income equality) to 1 (absolute inequality in which one person owns everything). Sweden has the best Ginni score (.23), Thailand's score is slightly better than the US score of .45. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ

  • 14 JUNE 2018 - SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: A woman walks through the jewelry section of Namdaemun Market. Namdaemun Market is one of the oldest continually running markets in South Korea, and one of the largest retail markets in Seoul. The streets in which the market is located were built in a time when cars were not prevalent, so the market itself is not accessible by car. The main methods of transporting goods into and out of the market are by motorcycle and hand-drawn carts. It occupies many city blocks, which are blocked off from most car traffic due to the prevalence of parking congestion in the area. PHOTO BY JACK KURTZ
