  • 08 FEBRUARY 2015  BANGKOK, THAILAND:  A man studies Sikh texts in a Guru Granth Sahib at the Sikh temple in Bangkok. Thailand has a small but influential Sikh community. Sikhs started coming to Thailand, then Siam, in the 1890s. There are now several thousand Thai-Indian Sikh families. Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha was established in 1913. Construction of the current building, adjacent to the original Gurdwara ("Gateway to the Guru"), started in 1979 and was finished in 1981. The Gurdwara serves about 500 free meals Monday through Saturday and about 1,000 free meals on Sundays. The meals are free for anyone who walks into the Gurdwara, regardless of their religion or nationality. Although Sikhs are not vegetarians, the Langar meals are vegetarian so anyone can them without violating a religious edict on diet. The Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha in Bangkok is one of the largest Sikh Gurdwaras (temples) outside of India. It is in Bangkok's "Little India" neighborhood, next to Chinatown.
