  • 10 JULY 2013 - PATTANI, PATTANI, THAILAND:  The night market near Krue Se Mosque in Pattani, Thailand. The market opens late every afternoon during Ramadan to sell food for Iftar. Iftar is the meal Muslims take when they break their daily Ramadan fast. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and the month in which Muslims believe the Quran was revealed. Muslims believe that the Quran was sent down during this month, thus being prepared for gradual revelation by Jibraeel (Gabriel) to the prophet Muhammad.   • 31 MAY 2014 - BANGKOK, THAILAND:  Workers at a McDonald's restaurant in Bangkok take away Ronald McDonald because they were afraid the fast food icon would attract protestors opposed to the military coup. Some McDonald's restaurants in Thailand have become gathering places for anti-coup protestors. The restaurant chain has taken out ads trying to discourage people from protesting in and around the restaurants and put up signs asking people not to protest in the restaurant.   • 04 MAY 2010 - BANGKOK, THAILAND: Red Shirt protesters sit on the front steps of a McDonald's and listen to their speakers the main rally site in Ratchaprasong intersection in Bangkok Tuesday night. The Red Shirts have conditionally accepted the offer of Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament, investigate alleged human rights violations following the violence of April 10 and call for new elections in November of this year, 18 months earlier than they are currently scheduled, but they want more negotiation before they finalize any agreements. They said their protests would continue until a final agreement is reached. The Red Shirts, started their protest on March 13. They continue to call for Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to step down and dissolve parliament immediately and demand the return of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Bangkok used to be known as the "Venice of the East" because of the number of waterways the criss crossed the city. Now most of the waterways have been filled in but boats and ships still play an important role in daily life in Bangkok. Thousands of people commute to work daily on the Chao Phraya Express Boats and fast boats that ply Khlong Saen Saeb or use boats to get around on the canals on the Thonburi side of the river.
